Trees are more important today than ever before. More than 10,000 products are reportedly made from trees. Through chemistry, the humble woodpile is yielding chemicals, plastics and fabrics that were beyond comprehension when an axe first felled a Texas tree.

Wonder Window @Vandejong, Amsterdam

Image for Wonder Window @Vandejong, Amsterdam

During Covid I transformed my collection of everyday objects that feature popular animal patterns like leopard, tigers, and zebras into masks. Traditionally these kinds of masks were designed for transformation: as soon as you put on a mask, you invite the spirit of the animal into your body. Does this still happen when you wear your leopard-print sunglasses? Or do you get possessed by the spirit of commerce?

From May 25th you can see my collection in the Wonder Window of Vandejong in Amsterdam!

Exhibition: Ons dorp en de zee @ Zeeuws Museum, Middelburg

Image for Exhibition: Ons dorp en de zee @ Zeeuws Museum, Middelburg

Ons dorp en de zee (Our Village and The Sea) is the second in a new series of exhibitions by De Mix Nederland. It is the result of an initiative by Stichting Beeldmix in partnership with NS, ProRail and the Zeeuws Museum. In each new show by De Mix, historical photo collections are used as a source of inspiration by contemporary Dutch photographers. The exciting, stimulating and sometimes touching combinations produce an unexpected voyage of discovery in The Netherlands of today and yesterday.

“Ons dorp en de zee (Our Village and the Sea) is a series of loving encounters on the dike of Westkapelle. We see people and things that, like Neeltje Flipse-Roelse, are drawn to the sea. I think the way Annegien van Doorn explores her own relationship with the sea through these encounters is extraordinary. In juxtaposition to Van Doorn’s sharp and funny observations and interventions, the artistic talent of Zeeland’s amateur photographer Flipse-Roelse is convincingly demonstrated”
